You all must KNOW I was going to eventually blog this topic!!! As a lover - and breeder of Chihuahuas, we had to have this movie in our DVD library! Today was my son's birthday so we chilled as a family - dogs and all - and watched it. It's an adorable movie that appeals to kids and adults. Very Disneyesque and filled with toy breed clichés but entertaining none the less.
When the movie came out I should have run to the theater to see it (time is a precious commodity in my life - I simply didn't have enough). I have received many calls and emails looking for Papi and Chloe look-a-like pups and was often times left confused. I also grew concerned over the number of young children that were being given Chihuahuas puppies recently. (they DIDN'T get them from us!!!) Now that I have watched it, things make a LOT more sense and I can respond appropriately.
First - I simply cannot match the look of Papi. He is NOT a full breed Chihuahua.
His story is amazing and one that makes me very happy to see being promoted. Rescues from shelters should always be the first choice when looking for a family pet. He was a rescue and is what I believe to be - at a minimum - a Chiweenie (Dachshund and Chihuahua mix).
Second - the concern arose that more and more people would be looking to add a Chihuahua to the family after this movie. A Chihuahua is a 15 to 20 year commitment and bringing one home should never be taken lightly. Like after the 101 Dalmatians movies, I worry that the interest will explode - as well as the number of Chihuahuas suddenly living at shelters.
Third - a small breed dog should honestly never be around small children and definitely not the responsibility of one. To buy a Chihuahua puppy for a small child can lead to devastating results. They are much more fragile than a larger dog and can easily be hurt - mostly by accident. They follow you at your heals and can easily be kicked across the floor if you don't pay attention. Their bones are broken easily. Dropping a 10 lb lab puppy from your arms is a lot different than dropping a 2 lb Chihuahua puppy. Also, due to their small size, they have a high rate of experiencing hypoglycemia. A young puppy will play at great lengths with a playful child, a quick way to induce an drop in blood sugar. I do not know a young child experienced enough to know how to handle and helping a puppy recover from the shock.
Put this all together and what do you get?? When your young child begs you for a Chihuahua after watching this movie - take them to the shelter and find their perfect new best friend!!! An older pup or dog is just as adorable has an 8 - 10 week old one and is a lot less expensive. You will not need to invest in the series of puppy boosters! Also, the spay/neuter issue is taken care of AND you will most likely save their life! Take all of this and add the fact that a 5 to 6 lb full grown Chihuahua is much more strong and solid - much less vulnerable. The perfect way to give your child their dream come true - without the potential nightmare of accidentally hurting - or even killing - their new best friend!
I have been doing a lot of sewing these past couple weeks and during my search for the perfect cocktail print fabric, I fell upon this very retro looking pattern that was a bit lighter weight than I desired for the harness vests. My creative mind went bonkers and I had "party dress" ideas running wild. Here is the result - SO STINKIN CUTE!!!
Karen with Florida Chi and I headed out to Lakeland today for the Tampa Bay Chihuahua Club Specialty Dog Show and were able to witness the Long Coat portion of the event. It's normally the Smooth Coats we see but it appears there are a lot more LCs entering the ring lately. I personally love the LCs so it was a true treat for me! 
The holidays helped increase the number of adorable Chis I have in my Aye Chihuahua collection - I am up to eight now!!
With the temps dipping the dogs have become burrows to the twelfth power! If there is a blanket in their vicinity they are finding their way under or wrapped in it. Bundled to keep warm is their only recourse after the sun goes down. They are learning their sharing skills as there are only so many blankets to go around.
Ok all of you ChiChi lovers - Look what I found! I have what some might call a brown thumb but I just HAD to get me one! Maybe I will put a silk plant in it ;) Either way - it is SO stinkin cute!
Tam and her family brought Mojo (aka Coffee Coolata) for a visit and to check out our little Ace. Man did he grow up to be a beautiful Chichi! He looks SOOOO much like his daddy Mo, it's scary! And just as spunky too.
The requests keep rolling in for these little guys and still haven't finished my own pack's! Since we have so many dogs in so many different sizes, I wanted their stuffed versions to be equivalent.
We have a few banana trees in our backyard and the dogs LOVE them. The browning leaves are their favorite chew thing. Cosmo loves to carry them around while Cocoa prefers to use the leaves in tug-o-war. Dewy loves to just chew and slurp on them and Dude hides them under dog beds for a saved snack for later.

We have family in town and are celebrating a late Christmas together. You know you have an AWESOME family when they include your dogs in their holiday gift list! This year they got a bag full of new toys and this adorable little cap that we just had to try on Dude.
We intentionally bought a camper that is large enough to comfortably accommodate all of the dogs AND humans - allowing camping trips to be fun and memorable for all. Unfortunately, most camp grounds have a two dog limit. We strategically walk the dogs two at a time as not to bring attention to our gaggle of chis. There honestly has never been an issue but we try to remain as respectful as possible of other campers - who generally are enamored by our dogs and and fall in love with them. Today I noticed something I guess never crossed my mind before which I suppose gives us away more than the dogs themselves - LOOK AT THIS!!!!!
My mother and father-in-law sent us this and I must say - hands down - this is my all time favorite gift ever! I have NO idea where they found it but as a true lover of Chihuahuas, this is the most precious way to add to our holiday celebration.
One average size doggy bed and several not so average size chihuahuas. FIVE dogs in one bed - chichi overflowith! We all giggled when we came in to see this. I realize it is a bit nippy but my word - we have 4 dog beds!!!!
I always tell our new puppies' parents of the deals I find along the way. Sometimes it seems as if when the word "pet" or "dog/puppy" has been attached to a product they quadruple the price. Taking care of a dog is expensive so finding a deal is always a bonus.
